Komotini City

Komotini is a flat city, built in the Thracian plain and the foothills of the Rhodope Mountains at an altitude of 31-55 meters, about 30 km drive from the sea. It is a major commercial, financial and transportation center of Thrace and is located on the railway line Thessaloniki-Alexandroupolis. The population, according to the 2001 census, is 52,659 inhabitants, but that number is growing significantly due to approximately 16,000 students living in the city. Piraeus, the largest port in Greece

Piraeus is situated in the west of the district of Attica, about 5 km from the centre of Athens. Much of Athens's industry is located at Piraeus and the city is a major settlement. The port is a busy transit location for both goods and passengers. Ferries for the islands of Greece leave from the port and it is connected to Athens by the metro line.The area on which Piraeus stands has been inhabited since 2600 BC. The city was originally planned by the architect Ippodamos from Melos, and was built in the 5th century BC. Wall defences were built around the port 493–79 BC. Later, Pericles completed the fortification by building the Makra Teichi (the Long Walls) which protected both sides of the road between Athens and Piraeus. The area went into a state of decline from 395 BC onward, and was only revived in the early 19th century AD. In the intervening period the port was rarely used, except by pirates and invading enemies. The recovery of Piraeus began in 1829, and in 1834 the port was rebuilt using the original plans. During World War II, the port suffered extensive damage from both German, and subsequently Allied, bombing of the harbour and the boats moored in it. When the occupying German army left Piraeus they attempted to blow up the port on their retreat; resulting in its near-destruction. Beautiful Neoclassic buildings, hopefully some of them have been saved, are standing out with their prominence and brightness. Yet these ones among them, which have been reconditioned, are standing firm, proud like, ringed with the glamour of another past. The most distinguished among them is the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, built in 1884, designed by John Lazarides. It is really an architectural jewel of Piraeus. The building of Ernest Chiller (German architect), built in 1876 which is found at Alexandra square, the Chatzikyriakio orphanage for girls, built in 1883, the N.A.T. office building, the Nursing House of Piraeus, the old Post Office, the building of Metro Station, the summer resort of drink maker Metaxa, the building of the French institute (home of C. Strigos) and a lot of other old buildings at Kastella.

Ano Pedina Zagori

Ano Pedina (Upper Soudena) is one of the oldest Zagorohoria villages. It is located 35 kilometers north of Ioannina City and at an altitude of 900 meters. The name probably Soudena is Slavic and means "cool place", possibly because of the cold airstreams coming from the five hills' slope to the village Ano Pedina that is allocated among the hills.The first historical reference to the village is the Chrysovolo (order) in the year of 1362 of the Byzantine Emperor Andronikos III Palaiologos. The upper village area called Machalas has its center in the church of Virgin Mary. Around 1670 was created Under Machalas which is centered in the area of church Metamorphosis. During the late Ottoman Empire the village has the best period as all Zagorohoria villages, because of the autonomy and the famous travel baths of Zagori. The Soudeniotes inhibitants traveled mainly in Wlachia, Istanbul, Minor Asia and Egypt.Moreover Soudena had developed a high spiritual growth, which shows the dozens of floors at the perimeter of the settlement.

Santorini, a famous island

Santorini is an island located in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km southeast of mainland Greece. It is also known as Thira and is the southernmost member of the group of Cyclades islands with a population of 13,670 residents. Santorini is essentially what remains of a massive volcanic eruption that destroyed the ancient settlement existed on the island and led to the current geological caldera. The breathtaking natural beauty, with a dynamic nightlife, have made the island one of the famous tourist destinations. A giant central lagoon is surrounded by high cliffs on three sides. On the fourth side, the lagoon is separated from the sea by another much smaller island called Thirassia. The lagoon merges with the sea in two places in the northwest and southwest. The water in the middle of the lagoon is about 400 meters depth, thus it is a safe haven for all kinds of shipping. All the ports of the island are on the side of the lagoon and there are ports on the outer perimeter of the island. The capital, Fira, is at the top of the cliff and is looking the lagoon.In the island was one of the largest volcanic eruptions has ever seen the planet: the Minoan eruption (sometimes is called the Thera eruption), which occurred about 3600 years ago. The explosion left a large caldera, which is surrounded by volcanic ash and can be linked indirectly to the collapse of the Minoan civilization on Crete, 110 km to the south, from the creation of a giant tsunami. Another popular theory holds that the explosion of Thera is the source of the myth of Atlantis. Santorini was united with Greece in 1912. The major settlements therein are: Fira, Oia, Emporio, Kamari, Perissa, Imerovigli, Pyrgos and Thirassia. Akrotiri is an important archaeological site with ruins from the Minoan era. The island relies on tourism, especially during the summer months. In order Caldera to continue its being, the island's pumice quarries closed in 1986.
