Drama, a city with long history

Drama, a city with long history

The natural wealth of the city in plenty of running water did not leave anyone unmoved by his passage from this area. Both prehistoric man and one of the historical years organized their lives around the water, making the area of water a connecting factor of the long presence of man in the modern city. The earliest permanent human settlement on the site of present city of Drama was identified after a systematic excavation of the prehistoric settlement of the "Arcadian", south of the park of Saint Barbara. The Neolithic settlement is the first residential heart of the city since the mid-6th millennium BC.Although Drama, in the mid-19th century, is the Capital of a big region, where there axist the administrative center, the army and the courts, it can not compete with the port of Kavala, a hub of the region. Significant changes are made to the city after 1870, when the production and the trade in tobacco cause population growth and strengthening of the commercial traffic. The operation of the railway station by 1895 and the improval of the road network to the port of Kavala connect Drama with the major centers of the empire and maritime trade routes. Large tobacco firms establish branches in Drama, built warehouses, operate banking offices, and England opens consulate in the city. Soon, new neighborhoods are created around the waters of Santa Barbara and west of the walled area to meet the needs of 6000-7000 residents. The new residents, Muslims, Christians and Jews, constitute separate residential cores according to the standards of the Ottoman period. Christians, who constantly reinforced with families from Western Macedonia and in particular Epirus, number at least 200 families in 1880, located within the old walls and south of this area in Santa Barbara. Muslims are located west of the market and settling Jews in the area of the waters of Santa Barbara. The new public buildings of the city and the private residences reflect the economic strength and influence of European standards. The Greek community differs, from 1870 until the liberation, for the economic development, the establishment of Educational Associations, the rebuilding of schools and the charity associations. In the early 20th century, When the population is already 14,000 people and the economic progress is continuing, sporadic violence of an undeclared war are being recorded, the Makedonian race. The Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Drama, the elders and the people of the town organize the defense of the Greek community.

Ios, one of the most beautiful islands in the Cyclades

Ios, one of the most beautiful islands in the Cyclades

In the deep blue Aegean Sea, between Santorini, Paros, Naxos and Sikinos, emerges from one of the most beautiful islands of Greece, Ios. It is a small island differing for the long golden beaches, crystal clear waters and picturesque bays. Its characteristic is that it has 86km. coastline, of which 32 km. are sandy! It has an area 108t.chlm. with relevant dimensions, length 17km. and a width of 7.5 km. The distance from Piraeus is 108n.m. and it is covered by ferry in about 8 hours and from Rafina to speed in about half time. The daily ferry transport is very frequent in the tourist season (about 20 arrivals and departures every day) to Piraeus and the surrounding islands, but in the winter with two ships a day.The soils of Ios age about 500 million years. The island's climate is cool, so even the periods of high temperature (June-August), the winds will freshen the locals and visitors. The average temperature in the hot summer months is between 27C-29C, while other times 12-18C. It is known worldwide as the young people island, it has to offer visitors, many more than the sun, the sea and the fun. Ships arriving on the island are welcomed by the first beautiful, white chapel of Agia Irini (17th century), which is built right into the harbor. A visitor admires  the serenity, the charm and the tranquility of the famous, for the security through morphology, port of Ios. Every summer, it becomes an attraction for Greek and foreign yachts, with about 1500 port of call during the tourist season. It has all the capabilities of supplying yachts with fuel, water, food, ice and electricity from specific slots. The port is the paradise for visitors. Everywhere you can find information! For hotels, restaurants, beaches, roads, entertainment, traffic. The well-organized tourist agencies, and the hospitable locals are always eager to inform and help visitors. In Gialos (otherwise known as the local port) you can find almost everything! Super markets, shops selling clothes and souvenirs, cafes, restaurants, hotels and rooms to rent, bikes and cars. In the small beach of the harbor, visitors can enjoy the sun and sea with a view of ships and boats that go in and out of the port, or can do water sports. There is another option for swimming near the port. 2km. from the port lies the town of Ios. Scenic and white, it is built on the hill, which appears at the top of the beautiful lady of the island! The Panagia Gremiotissa. The view is panoramic. The whole village is poured on her feet forward. On the right is the Port, on the left the windmills, and across the neighboring islands of Sikinos and Santorini. When the weather permits, off in the distance stands the island of Crete. The church Gremiotissa is of Byzantine architecture and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The tradition explains why people of Ios built the church in the cliffs on top of the hill: The image of the Virgin Mary with the Christ, which is now in the church, was once on the Bay Mylopotas in rocks and lit by a candle.

Milos, the island of Aphrodite

Milos, the island of Aphrodite

The civilization of Milos is considered to be as ancient as that of Crete and spans a period of at least 5000 years. Its fame spread throughout the civilized world thanks to the masterpiece of the Aphrodite of Milos (Venus de Milo), a statue found buried on the island in the 19th century (1820) and is now in the Louvre Museum in Paris. Around 5000 BC, Flakopi, the oldest settlement on the island was in existence between 4000 and 5000 BC.The settlement was destroyed twice by invaders and was finally rebuilt in 800 BC in a different style. The ability to take advantage of the various mineral ores gave the inhabitants a plethora of tools having incredible precision for those years. Flakopis existence is situated between the Neolithic and Iron ages as many recent archaeological excavations have determined. The town was finally burnt down. The end of Flakopi came at around the same time as the Mycenaean civilization was flourishing elsewhere. It was around 1000 BC and at that time the Dorian invaders arrived on the island. In fact, Thucydides reported in one of his books that it was for about 700 years that the Dorians made Milos their home. Milos became a center for artistic endeavor as shown by the wonderful statue of Aphrodite of Milos created around 400 BC.

Among them, Mikines was the most glorious one and it gave its name to one of the most splendid cultural periods of the ancient times, the Mikinean period. The whole area was disordered in the 12th century BC by various movements of immigration. As a result, Argos was subjected to Dories it became a Doric center and gradually it subjected other Argolic towns. In the Archaic and in the classical period, there was a common sanctuary in Argolida Ireo whereas in the Hellenistic years the temple of Asklipios in Epidavros became very significant. In 146 BC, the city was conquered by the Romans and it declined. The invasions by Erouloi (267 AD) and by Goth (395 AD) disordered the area for one more time. During the Byzantine rule, Argolida belonged to the authorities of Peloponnese and it was greatly developed. At the beginning of the 13th century it subdued to the Francs and it belonged to Otto de la Ros master of Athens. For certain short periods of time it belonged to the Venetians and finally it subjected to the Turkish (1540). In the Revolution of 1821, its residents participated in some of the greatest military enterprises that took place here. Nafplio had become the temporary basis of the revolutionary government and the capital of the newborn Greek state (1828) until 1834 when Athens became the new capital. Today Argolida is one of the most fertile areas in Greece and a major tourist center.
