Evia is the second largest Greek island by area and population, after Crete. The island of Evia, Skyros and a small piece of mainland constitute administrative the prefecture of Evia, which belongs to the region of Central Greece. At the closest point to the Central Greece, is located the capital (and largest city) of the prefecture, Chalkida. At Chalkida there is one of the two island's links with the mainland of Greece. Recently, apart from the old bridge of Chalkida, was built Chalkida's high bridge, one of the largest bridges in Europe.
The total area of Evia reaches about 3670 sq. km. It is stretching along the northeastern Central Greece from Maliakos bay until the northeastern coast of Rafina, from which is separated by the sea of Evia. In general, the shape of the island is narrow. The northern and northeastern coast is bordering the Aegean Sea.
