Andros - The Story of a multifaceted island

Andros - The Story of a multifaceted island

Τhe name of the island most probably originates from General Andros from Crete, legendary colonizer of the Minoan times. Archeological excavations prove the existence of developed settlements, dating back to Mycenaean times or even earlier. The island becomes historically known during the Geometric period (9th-7th century B.C.), as it is proved by traces of a settlement found in Zagora, at the south-western part of the island, close to Zaganiari. The capital of Andros island, during the classical times, was Paleopoli. The prosperity during that period is shown by the big production of coins. Relevant findings together with Hermes of Andros statue are exhibited in the Archeological Museum in Hora. In 7th century B.C. Andros island participated with Chalkideans to the colonization of Chalkidiki and coastal areas of Thrace in northern Greece.Andros, following with the rest Aegean islands the fate of continental Greece, consecutively fell under Roman, Frank and Ottoman occupation. Dating back to 11th century, Byzantine style churches are found around the island, like Taxiarchis in Ipsilou, Melida and Messaria and Kimisi Theotokou (Assumption) in Mesathouri. In the 14th century, the "Agias Monastery" (Zoodochos Pigi) was built near Batsi, while Agios Nikolaos monastery was founded in 1560 and rebuilt in 18th century. Panachrantou monastery was founded in mid-17th century. At Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) in Korthi, a school has been established in 1813, before the Greek War of Independence against the Ottomans. It was founded by Samuel Plasimis and it incorporates a separate building, serving as the teachers house and library. On May 10th, 1821, Theofilos Kairis declared the War of Independence, thus marking the starting point of the islands recent history, during which Andros reached the peak of its economic prosperity, thanks to its ships. It is worth noting that Andriot Dimitris Moraitis initiated Greece-North America line in the beginning of the 20th century, while Andros was in 1939 second to Piraeus regarding ship registration.

Paxos, the love nest of Neptune

Paxos, the love nest of Neptune

The more northerly part of the harbour, Maneskos, is deeper. Larger vessels are able to dock here. The name Gaios comes from Agios Gaios, who brought Christianity to the island. His tomb is in the sanctuary of the church of the Holy Apostles, where there are some noteworthy frescoes. According to tradition, soil from the tomb has medicinal properties and can be used in the treatment of snakebite. The islands most brilliant festival is on 29th June, when there is a celebration for both the Holy Apostles and Agios Gaios. The Byzantine as well as the Venetian periods promoted development of the islands both economically and culturally. Significant monuments, exemplifying these two periods are found among some island churches, dating back to the palaeo-Christian period, and the Venetian fortress respectively. White and imposing, the hermits cliff takes its name from a monk who lived here in old days, subsisting off the roots which he collected on the mountain. The only harbour on Antipaxi with level land on the shore in Agrapidia. Larger vessels do not moor there, the water being too shallow. The only village, Agrapidia, is set amid vineyards. The beautiful beaches of the island can be reached with speedboats, which every day shuttle to and fro with tourists from Paxi. There are some small tavernas where one can find food and relaxation after a day at the beach. There is a stream of fresh water coming into the sea at Kaloroi Beach. Antipaxi is a place for a quiet, peaceful holiday.Agios Nikolaos: This picturesque small island with its chapel, its old windmill and the ruins of a Venetian fortress built in 1423, occupies a prominent position at the entrance to the harbour of Gaios. The view from here is magnificent. The Monastery of the Panagia is situated on the small island of Panagia which can be seen by the visitor on entering the harbour of Gaios. Each year on 15th August, her feast day, boiled meat is served to the faithful. The rocky seashores and the clear waters are ideal for swimming. The village of Lakka took its name from its position. Its houses are built at a low elevation and close to the sea. The view from the lighthouse is superb. It is worth visiting the Ellinospito, a kind of fort, where the locals sought refuge when pirates came to the island. Similarly of interest is the Ipapandis Church, built in 1774. Renaissance elements can be seen in its ornamentation. One could also visit the Sea Cave of Ipapandis, which is said to communicate with the church and with the Grammatikos Mansion. Longos nestles amidst dense vegetation, which reaches as far as the harbour. The shallowness of the water makes it impossible for larger vessels to dock. The beaches of Levrechio, Marmari, Kipo and Kipiadi are suitable for swimming, windsurfing, and also camping. If the visitor is looking for unspoilt beaches, Fikia and Glyfada are worth visiting. Also of interest is the oil-press of the Anemogiannis family, one of the oldest families of Paxi. The churches of Agios Nikolaos, patron of sailors, and Zoodochou Pigi, have some frescoes of interest to a visitor. Ozias is the islands second largest village after Gaios. Of interest to the visitor are the ruins of the early Christian church of Agia Marina and the rocks with holes in them from the wind, a remarkable natural phenomenon.

Parga, a heavenly place

Parga, a heavenly place

Parga, this divine land, attracted the attention of gods and daemons. The icon of Mother Mary along with the multiple memories of fleeing the settlement of Paleoparga, situated at the facing mountain called Petzovolio, to the cave outside the castle, convinced the inhabitants to settle on the rock, where today the castle stands. Loved by the virgin Mary, and earlier by Mars, the period of her free life will end on the 15th of April 1819. Archeological finds, written scripts of the past and legend confirm that human activity was present in this region from antiquity. The Neolithic flint stone that was found in an olive plantation, the domed shaped Minoan grave found on the property of Souida, the ancient wall segment found outside the grounds of the Venetian castle along with a foundation stone which constituted part of an ancient dock on the western side of Valtos bay, which unfortunately was covered by rocks to build a marina, the rectangular shaped graves on the road close to Anthousa, all undoubtedly prove the existence of human civilization in the region throughout antiquity. Byzantine sources first refer to Parga in 1337 and most likely refer to the older settlement of the castle and not Paleoparga at Petzovolio. The settlement at its new position will have to deal this many perils during the passing of time. For six years Parga will have to endure the rule of the thief Bogoi (who considered himself as of Alban - Serbian - Boulgarian - Vlahos decent). When he leaves he will request the protection of the Venetians. Their presence will be felt between the 15th and 18th centuries. Throughout this period Parga will be autonomous. The raids and looting from land and sea will not cease during this period. Hairetin Varvarosa will be one of those who will loot her. The situation stabilizes from the late 16th century to the late 18th century. Parga develops economically, and becomes a trade center. The old customs office (Dogana) at Valtos still exists up to this day. Dogana also served as a shelter and outpost for the "kleftes" (rebels who fought against the rule of the Ottoman Empire). The water fountain and the house of Boukouvala, along with the well of Androutso bear whiteness this.
