A large number of Greek and foreign vacationers and tourists flock to the reputed Prespa Lakes. The latter are situated on the Greece - FYROM - Albania border, with an elevation of 850 m above sea level and a depth of 50 m. In many parts, the lake banks are steep rocky walls, while elsewhere they become almost flat with lush vegetation. Mikri (small) Prespa lies on the left side of the central road and is separated from Megali (big) Prespa by a narrow strip of land measuring 1,000 m.The entire area is worth visiting and has been designated as a national park. Mikri (small) Prespa, fringed with reed beds, provides shelter to pelicans, wild ducks and to many rare species of birds that attract the interest of international scientific institutes. Access to the Prespa Lakes is possible via two roads. One starts from Florina and the other ascends from Kastoria. They intersect at Prevali. 50 km from Florina near the village of Lemos Prespon the road forks again, one branch leading to Agios Germanos, the largest village in the Prespa area, and the other to the military post of Koula. The region of Plastiras Lake is located in Karditsa Prefecture, 25 km west of the city. Starting for the Lake by car from Athens you will need to cover about 340 km, and from Thessaloniki just 230 km. The route in the prefecture is mountainous and scenic, thrilling the driving lovers, with several turns and provincial network. The lake lies at an altitude of 1000 meters and bears the name of Nicholas Plastiras, a great military and political figure, who in 1925 conceived the idea of diverting the river Megdovas and to build a dam in the area. The idea finally materialized after his death and was completed in 1959. The lake spread in the plateau of Nevropolis creating one of the largest artificial lakes in Greece. Around the Lake, there are fourteen villages, giving the traveler a high degree of alternative destinations and different accommodations. The Mesenikolas is the first village leaving behind Karditsa. It's built at an altitude of 700m. and famous for its wine and raki its residents offer. It is worth visiting the church of the Life Giving Fountain with murals of 1646 east of the village. Two kilometers to the north at an altitude of 800m. is the Morfovouni, hometown of Nikolaos Plastiras, with stunning views of the plain of Thessaly. The path alongside the edge of the lake our guide to the villages overlooking the lake. From the village Kerasia, the ring road leads to Krioneri, a village built next to the lake with good tourist infrastructure. Trails lead to the forests of Krioneri with the firs, the oak, chestnut. Do not forget to visit them if you can tolerate. If you love nature, they will amaze you. The next village on the shores of the lake is the Kalyvia Pezoulas with a strong tourism development and organized outdoor areas and beaches. Street from Pezoula will lead you to Fylakti and Neraida. The village of Fylakti is at an altitude of 1200m. on the steep slopes of Mount Voutsinaki overlooking a dense forest. The road ends at Fylakti and so we turn back to Pezoula and at the junction that will lead us to Neraida at an altitude of 1120m. in an area full of chestnut trees and with magnificent views of the lake. Here you can take lots of pictures for your album. The area had been previously resort of the inhabitants of Karditsa. A small road from Neraida leads to a small ski resort at an altitude of 1550m. Then, we head for the largest and most organized tourist village in the area, Neochori, which lies on a slope and has the best view of the lake. In Neochori, it worths visiting the botanical garden that includes plants that make up the ecosystem of the region. The last stop on your journey is the dam you will find a few kilometers from Neochori and after Belokomiti. If you visit the lake be sure to see up close the dam. Piraeus, the largest port in Greece

Piraeus, the largest port in Greece

Piraeus is situated in the west of the district of Attica, about 5 km from the centre of Athens. Much of Athens's industry is located at Piraeus and the city is a major settlement. The port is a busy transit location for both goods and passengers. Ferries for the islands of Greece leave from the port and it is connected to Athens by the metro line. The area on which Piraeus stands has been inhabited since 2600 BC. The city was originally planned by the architect Ippodamos from Melos, and was built in the 5th century BC. Wall defences were built around the port 493–79 BC. Later, Pericles completed the fortification by building the Makra Teichi (the Long Walls) which protected both sides of the road between Athens and Piraeus. The area went into a state of decline from 395 BC onward, and was only revived in the early 19th century AD. In the intervening period the port was rarely used, except by pirates and invading enemies. The recovery of Piraeus began in 1829, and in 1834 the port was rebuilt using the original plans. During World War II, the port suffered extensive damage from both German, and subsequently Allied, bombing of the harbour and the boats moored in it. When the occupying German army left Piraeus they attempted to blow up the port on their retreat; resulting in its near-destruction. Beautiful Neoclassic buildings, hopefully some of them have been saved, are standing out with their prominence and brightness. Yet these ones among them, which have been reconditioned, are standing firm, proud like, ringed with the glamour of another past. The most distinguished among them is the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, built in 1884, designed by John Lazarides. It is really an architectural jewel of Piraeus. The building of Ernest Chiller (German architect), built in 1876 which is found at Alexandra square, the Chatzikyriakio orphanage for girls, built in 1883, the N.A.T. office building, the Nursing House of Piraeus, the old Post Office, the building of Metro Station, the summer resort of drink maker Metaxa, the building of the French institute (home of C. Strigos) and a lot of other old buildings at Kastella.

Rethymno, the heart of Crete

Rethymno, the heart of Crete

The prefecture of Rethymno is the most mountainous of the prefectures of Crete and extends to the west of Heraklion. Its characteristic feature is the location because it lies between the White Mountains and Psiloritis. The capital of the prefecture of Rethymnon is a very picturesque city, where you can admire the old harbor, Lodzia, the Venetian building of 16th century which was a place of political, financial forum and entertainment. An impressive building which is typical for the city of Rethimno is the Fortezza. It is a fortress built between 1571 – 1600 on Palaiokastro hill. Moreover, you should visit the Ottoman era, the mosque Nerantzes, the mosque of Kara Moussa Passa and Great Door of Veli Pasa. Walking the streets of old town, the visitor will see old and new buildings. Arriving in the new city you can see the variety of modern hotel units that make the stay of many visitors each year enjoyable. For beach lovers who do not have means of transport, sandy beach of Rethymno is ideal because it has a length of 12 kilometers, starting from the city and ends at Scaletta (area outside the city on the east side). There operate large hotels that emphasize in quality of service and everyone can find the accommodation of his choice. The part of the beach, located in the town attracts many visitors during the summer months and it has a large number of lifeguards. Also, at this beach one can deal with various activities like water sports.

Corfu, the island that fascinated poets and kings

Corfu, the island that fascinated poets and kings

The exceptional geographical position of Corfu determined, from the beginning, the role that the island was destined to play. Crossing point and meeting place of ideas and of human coexistence, melting pot of civilizations, managed to fuse together harmoniously the often-contradictory trends and to exhibit a cultural identity quite unique and different from the rest parts of Greece. The coexistance of Romans and Byzantines with locals, enriched with immigrants from southern Italy and Sicily, Venice and later France, England, Malta and other Mediterranean countries, fused together with Jews and waves of refugees from the Turk-occupied Greece and Crete (especially after the fall of Candia), makes the city a place of exemplary complexness, the multicultural character of which, is reflected on the arts and the lettered, on the social life of the city and suburbs. The inclination of corfiots to the spectacles, the music and the opera is the result of the living history and coexists with the deepest respect for the national and religious symbols. The western style of the buildings and of the artistic expression, of the customs and the musical tradition constitutes the expression of the cultural osmosis of Corfu with the West. A procedure that, despite the predictions to the opposite, left the Eastern Greek Orthodox Dogma untouched, in times that the Eastern Christianity, in her historical borders, was either savagely oppressed or ceased to exit.
