Kythnos, an island ideal for relaxing holidays

Kythnos, an island ideal for relaxing holidays

Kythnos probably took its name from the leader of Dryops and first inhabitant of the island, Kythnos, although his existence is doubtful. Another possibility is that its name comes from the stem "kyth", which derives from the verb keptho (hide) and refers to the place where one can hide, probably a place with woods, valleys, caves or mines. Recent excavations at Maroulas area have brought to light findings which prove that the island was inhabited during the Mesolithic Period, that is it may have been the oldest settlement of man on Cyclades. In the 13th century B.C., according to Herodotus, the Dryops emigrated to the island, traces of whom are the Cyclopean walls and the temples they have left behind. The Ions were the next to inhabit the island. In the Kinthean Republic, Aristotle refers to the ideal state those peoples had created.During the Persian Wars, Kythnos participates with one trireme and soon after it becomes member of the Athenian Alliance. Later it becomes part of the Roman state and afterwards it is included in the Aegean Theme by the Byzantines. During the Venetian domination it is conquered by the noble Marko Sanoudo and it is called Thermia, because of its hot (therma) spring waters. Then it comes under the rule of the Castelli family and later on the family of Gozadini. It remains under the rule of the family even after the looting of the pirate Barbarossa (1537), because of the peace treaty that was signed between the Turks and the Venetians, while during the Russian-Turkish war it is conquered by the Russians. In 1827, the island is called Kythnos again and takes part in the fight against the Turks. During the reign of Othona, rebels and political prisoners were exiled to Kythnos. In 1862 rebels from Syros came to the island to free the prisoners and clashed with the government’s army at the bay of St. Irini. The outcome of the clash was the repression of the rebels and the death of the rebels Leotsakos, Moraetinis, Scravelis and other exiles. Today, the people of Kythnos are in tourism business, without having abandoned other occupations such as agriculture and fishing. They offer to the visitor the perfect combination of the Cycladic scenery, the crystal clear waters, the local products (meat, dairy products, fruit, vegetables) and the fresh fish out of their own fishing boats.

Paxos, the love nest of Neptune

Paxos, the love nest of Neptune

The more northerly part of the harbour, Maneskos, is deeper. Larger vessels are able to dock here. The name Gaios comes from Agios Gaios, who brought Christianity to the island. His tomb is in the sanctuary of the church of the Holy Apostles, where there are some noteworthy frescoes. According to tradition, soil from the tomb has medicinal properties and can be used in the treatment of snakebite. The islands most brilliant festival is on 29th June, when there is a celebration for both the Holy Apostles and Agios Gaios. The Byzantine as well as the Venetian periods promoted development of the islands both economically and culturally. Significant monuments, exemplifying these two periods are found among some island churches, dating back to the palaeo-Christian period, and the Venetian fortress respectively. White and imposing, the hermits cliff takes its name from a monk who lived here in old days, subsisting off the roots which he collected on the mountain. The only harbour on Antipaxi with level land on the shore in Agrapidia. Larger vessels do not moor there, the water being too shallow. The only village, Agrapidia, is set amid vineyards. The beautiful beaches of the island can be reached with speedboats, which every day shuttle to and fro with tourists from Paxi. There are some small tavernas where one can find food and relaxation after a day at the beach. There is a stream of fresh water coming into the sea at Kaloroi Beach. Antipaxi is a place for a quiet, peaceful holiday.Agios Nikolaos: This picturesque small island with its chapel, its old windmill and the ruins of a Venetian fortress built in 1423, occupies a prominent position at the entrance to the harbour of Gaios. The view from here is magnificent. The Monastery of the Panagia is situated on the small island of Panagia which can be seen by the visitor on entering the harbour of Gaios. Each year on 15th August, her feast day, boiled meat is served to the faithful. The rocky seashores and the clear waters are ideal for swimming. The village of Lakka took its name from its position. Its houses are built at a low elevation and close to the sea. The view from the lighthouse is superb. It is worth visiting the Ellinospito, a kind of fort, where the locals sought refuge when pirates came to the island. Similarly of interest is the Ipapandis Church, built in 1774. Renaissance elements can be seen in its ornamentation. One could also visit the Sea Cave of Ipapandis, which is said to communicate with the church and with the Grammatikos Mansion. Longos nestles amidst dense vegetation, which reaches as far as the harbour. The shallowness of the water makes it impossible for larger vessels to dock. The beaches of Levrechio, Marmari, Kipo and Kipiadi are suitable for swimming, windsurfing, and also camping. If the visitor is looking for unspoilt beaches, Fikia and Glyfada are worth visiting. Also of interest is the oil-press of the Anemogiannis family, one of the oldest families of Paxi. The churches of Agios Nikolaos, patron of sailors, and Zoodochou Pigi, have some frescoes of interest to a visitor. Ozias is the islands second largest village after Gaios. Of interest to the visitor are the ruins of the early Christian church of Agia Marina and the rocks with holes in them from the wind, a remarkable natural phenomenon.

Piraeus, the largest port in Greece

Piraeus, the largest port in Greece

Piraeus is situated in the west of the district of Attica, about 5 km from the centre of Athens. Much of Athens's industry is located at Piraeus and the city is a major settlement. The port is a busy transit location for both goods and passengers. Ferries for the islands of Greece leave from the port and it is connected to Athens by the metro line. The area on which Piraeus stands has been inhabited since 2600 BC. The city was originally planned by the architect Ippodamos from Melos, and was built in the 5th century BC. Wall defences were built around the port 493–79 BC. Later, Pericles completed the fortification by building the Makra Teichi (the Long Walls) which protected both sides of the road between Athens and Piraeus. The area went into a state of decline from 395 BC onward, and was only revived in the early 19th century AD. In the intervening period the port was rarely used, except by pirates and invading enemies. The recovery of Piraeus began in 1829, and in 1834 the port was rebuilt using the original plans. During World War II, the port suffered extensive damage from both German, and subsequently Allied, bombing of the harbour and the boats moored in it. When the occupying German army left Piraeus they attempted to blow up the port on their retreat; resulting in its near-destruction. Beautiful Neoclassic buildings, hopefully some of them have been saved, are standing out with their prominence and brightness. Yet these ones among them, which have been reconditioned, are standing firm, proud like, ringed with the glamour of another past. The most distinguished among them is the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, built in 1884, designed by John Lazarides. It is really an architectural jewel of Piraeus. The building of Ernest Chiller (German architect), built in 1876 which is found at Alexandra square, the Chatzikyriakio orphanage for girls, built in 1883, the N.A.T. office building, the Nursing House of Piraeus, the old Post Office, the building of Metro Station, the summer resort of drink maker Metaxa, the building of the French institute (home of C. Strigos) and a lot of other old buildings at Kastella.

Holidays in Greece 2013: where to go, what to pack

Holidays in Greece 2013: where to go, what to pack

Holidays in Greece 2013: where to go, what to packIf there's a silver lining to the financial crisis - is there a silver lining? - it's that you can go on holiday and feel almost like a philanthropist, given that some countries, especially the warm ones with beaches, could use the extra cash. With that in mind, is there a better place to be philanthropic than Greece? With some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and hundreds of islands to visit, and with an economy that was particularly hard-hit by the financial crisis and suffering high unemployment, it's the perfect combination of need meeting need. Holidays to Greece in 2013 could be a great idea all round. And in fact many tourists have realized it, returning since visits dropped at the height of the financial crisis. But if you're not in the mood for crowded beaches filled with umbrellas and booze, there are hidden gems inGreecethat will provide all the relaxation and sun you need. Start with Kastelorizo, an island so isolated that, according to one guidebook, it's left off many maps. The island is the easternmost stretch of land inGreece, and is located less than 2km from the Turkish coast. While the rocky, steep coastline means its beaches leave something to be desired, Kastelorizo is still a perfect escape, with Olympic Airlines flying to the island daily fromRhodes. Colourful houses with wooden balconies, a castle and a historic mosque add to its charm.Other off-the-beaten-path holidays in Greeceinclude a particularly historic and spiritual island called Patmos, where St Johnis said to have written the New Testament book of Revelation. There are dozens of small churches on the island and a large monastery, testament to the island's outsized impact on Christian history. Much of the nightlife is near the town's quaint port and there are also very good beaches on the island. To get to Patmos, fly to Kosand then take the ferry - the only way there. In 2009, Forbes magazine named Patmos one of the most idyllic places in the world to live, noting its “air of quiet tranquillity” which it maintains from its spiritual past. What to bring toGreece? Very little actually other than the basics, given that most of what you might need, you can buy. Of course, in light of the sunny climate, and how pricey items like sunscreen can be on holiday, bringing sunscreen and other skin creams to take care of sun rash or other ailments is highly recommended.

Athens - A Few Words about its History

Athens - A Few Words about its History

The chronicle will take you from the Neolithic period, where according to the archeological findings it is estimated that the first organizing attempts of the city were made, at Pelasgus, by the first habitants which on 1400B.C. began fortifying Acropolis mountain with walls, to the age of Copper and 800B.C, when the final union of Athens into an integrated country took place, and there, for the first time, we find the Panathinaia, the leading fest of Athens in honor of god Athina. The “journey” continues with reference to the last king of Athens, Kodro (1068 BC), according to the valuable information of one of the most significant philosophers of all times, Aristotle, moves on to the four tribes the Athenian population was divided into in the 8th-7th century and to 636 B.C., when Cylon, taking advantage of the farmers disappointment, unsuccessfully tried to take over the tyranny with a coop, the wellknown “Cylonian Agos”. In 624 B.C. you will precisely understand what the legislation of Draconta consists of, in 594 B.C. how the opposing parties of the inhabitants and the wealthy of the time, commonly chose Solon to govern, the tyranny of Pisistratos in the mid 6th century B.C., the assassination of Hipparxos in 514 B.C., the significant alterations made by Klisthenis in 508 B.C. which build the grounds for The Athenian Democracy. The Chronicle describes the memory of the Persian king, in 500 B.C., when Athens sent help to the rebelling cities of Ionia. The Athenian courage in the battles of Marathon in 490 B.C. and in Artemisio in 480 B.C., the appearance of the leading role of Athens in 478 B.C., the wellknown victory of Eurimedonda that contributed to the liberation of all the greek cities from the Persian domination. The “gold century” of the Athenian Democracy unfolds before you in the 5th century B.C., a while after Periklis (490-429 B.C.) took charge of the Democratic Party and the First Peloponnesian War came to an end. Then the Acropolis monuments were built. An era in which, if you lived you would get the chance to meet Socrates, the Sophists, and the three great men, for whom you crowd together at the cashier office of the Athens Festival every summer, as well as the Ancient theatre in Epidavros in order to enjoy one of their plays. The Chronicle continues with the conclusion of the unique spiritual and artistic flourish of Athens, because of the Second Peloponnesian War (431-421B.C. and 416-404B.C.), the humiliating Athenian defeat in Sicily by the Lakedemonians, the prosperous period of the Macedonian Dynasty, the Russian domination, during which upon Adriano (117-138B.C.) the temple of Olympian Zeus was completed, the currently preserved aquarium was constructed and the Library was built. An important halt is the year 53B.C., when Apostle Paul educated Christan norms to the Areio Pago, before Stoic and Epicurean philosophers, 396B.C. was a terrible period as Athens fell into the hands of Gothic intruders. The uprising of Ioustiniano (482-565) to the empire throne played an important role in the avoidance of the ancient Greek world, but also from the era of the Emperor Hrakleio (574-640) a long period of obscurity and predatory attacks began for Athens. In 1204 the Crusades entered the Acropolis fort. The Frank occupation was maintained up until 1308, while the Catalanic Company up until 1387. Following Constantinople’s fortune, Athens was occupied in 1456. The era of the Turkish occupation is described in 14 journeys. In the beginning of the 19th century the Chronicle reminds us that in 1800 when Lord Elgin situated himself as an ambassador in Constantinople, invoking on the disasters of the ancient Athenian monuments, violently took away parts of the interior decoration of the temples on the Acropolis Mountain. In 1834 we see how Athens is declared to be the capital of Greece, by an order from the Regency and a year after the first public elections took place which resulted in Anargyro Petrakis being elected as mayor. In 1843 we discover the secrete councils in the house of a significant Greek, Makrigiannis, the great civil and Athenian guard revolution, which lead to the grant of a Constitution. In 1862 we observe the abolishment of Othons kingdom. A year later, we see his succession by George the First. In 1882 and for 15 following years we observe the domination of the leading personality of Harilaos Trikoupis. In 1896 we detect the revival of the Olympic Games in Athens. In the period of 1899-1908 we see the developments made in Athens by the Athenian Mayor Spyros Merkouris. Information on the activities of the greatest political personality of the 20th century Eleutherios Venizelos, whose project, outstanding accomplishments in our national completion and internal achievements as a country, are visible, as the light that surrounds us and are included in the specifics of the modern period. We move on to the period of the internal war, where an English Company resumed the activity of producing electric energy in the entire capital area. The telephones that operated through a phone center were replaced by automatic telephones. In 1928 the first political airport was created in the Delta Falirou area and the airport in the Hellinikon area was founded in 1934. You can also see the dictatorship imposition in 1936 by Ioannis Metaxas, the Second World War, the period of occupation and the political journey that lead to the “Decembriana” and the Varkiza agreemen, the dictatorship of April 21st 1967, the student and civil riot in 1973, the meta-political era up until September 6th 1997, when the International Olympic Games Committee entrusted the Olympic Games of 2004 to Athens.
