Mytilene

Mytilene

Mytilini got her name by one of Makaros daughters, the island's first colonist. The Municipality of Mytilini consists of the villages Agia Marina, Taxiarhes, Loutra, Panagiouda, Moria, Alyfanta, Afalonas, Pamphila and the city of Mytilini. It is about 188 miles from Piraeus and it has about 25000 inhabitants. Impressive buildings of a neo-classic architecture, historical monuments, unique archaeological treasures, like the mosaic-works found at Menandros House (exhibited now at the Archaeological Museum) and the natural hot springs compose a rich cultural context. The town's foundations are extended over seven adjoining hills. The centre of the town is divided into three main parts: Kioski, which is a very beautiful suburb, the central old neighbourhoods and the west neighbourhoods. The efforts of the authorities to reconstruct the centre of the town and to adapt the needs of the Municipality of Mytilini to the demands of the new century are remarkable. Kioski, the old aristocratic suburb of Mytilini where we can find the new Archaeological Museum, is not far away from the Enetic Castle. The Castle was situated on the isolated, by the channel of Euripus, part of Mytilini and seemed like a small island. The channel of Euripus, along which there were a lot of bridges, had been uniting, in the past, the south port to the north port dividing, this way, Mytilini in two parts. At Kioski there are still authentic mansions of a traditional Lesbian architecture. The main street that goes through Kioski leads to the north port, where we can see the shattered quay and other ruins of the past. In a small distance from there, there were found ancient ruins and the entrance of the channel that was mentioned above. Important ruins of ancient and roman structures are also discovered in the north part of Mytilini.

Drama, a city with long history

Drama, a city with long history

The natural wealth of the city in plenty of running water did not leave anyone unmoved by his passage from this area. Both prehistoric man and one of the historical years organized their lives around the water, making the area of water a connecting factor of the long presence of man in the modern city. The earliest permanent human settlement on the site of present city of Drama was identified after a systematic excavation of the prehistoric settlement of the "Arcadian", south of the park of Saint Barbara. The Neolithic settlement is the first residential heart of the city since the mid-6th millennium BC.Although Drama, in the mid-19th century, is the Capital of a big region, where there axist the administrative center, the army and the courts, it can not compete with the port of Kavala, a hub of the region. Significant changes are made to the city after 1870, when the production and the trade in tobacco cause population growth and strengthening of the commercial traffic. The operation of the railway station by 1895 and the improval of the road network to the port of Kavala connect Drama with the major centers of the empire and maritime trade routes. Large tobacco firms establish branches in Drama, built warehouses, operate banking offices, and England opens consulate in the city. Soon, new neighborhoods are created around the waters of Santa Barbara and west of the walled area to meet the needs of 6000-7000 residents. The new residents, Muslims, Christians and Jews, constitute separate residential cores according to the standards of the Ottoman period. Christians, who constantly reinforced with families from Western Macedonia and in particular Epirus, number at least 200 families in 1880, located within the old walls and south of this area in Santa Barbara. Muslims are located west of the market and settling Jews in the area of the waters of Santa Barbara. The new public buildings of the city and the private residences reflect the economic strength and influence of European standards. The Greek community differs, from 1870 until the liberation, for the economic development, the establishment of Educational Associations, the rebuilding of schools and the charity associations. In the early 20th century, When the population is already 14,000 people and the economic progress is continuing, sporadic violence of an undeclared war are being recorded, the Makedonian race. The Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Drama, the elders and the people of the town organize the defense of the Greek community.

Kasos, beautiful and quiet island

Kasos, beautiful and quiet island

It has five settlements: Fri, Agia Marina, Arvanitochori, Poli, and the Virgin Mary, which make up the municipality of Kassos, which belongs administratively to the province of Karpathos. The capital Fry is the only port. Next to the harbor, for the ships, there is a small port of Mpouka, full of boats and fishing boats. Near Fry is Emborios, the old port, with its beautiful old stone houses and the church of the Nativity of the Virgin. Also impressive are the churches of St. Spyridon and St. Marina. In all villages, but also in rural locations, there are churches and chapels with pebble floors and beautiful woodwork screens, such as the monastery of St. Mamas overlooking the Libyan Sea and St. George in Chadies, which has a large hostel. On the south, the bay Chelatros is ideal for those wishing to swim in the clear sea. The captain mansions are impressive, while in the settlements, the houses are whitewashed and the narrow streets are paved. Growing interest show the pastoral houses, "Mitata", carrying a long tradition of pastoral life. Many of them, particularly in areas Eleros, Troules, Xadies, Skafi, Maritsa are wonderfully preserved. Inside these houses, the fine dairy products of Kasos are being produced. For swimmers, the beaches are offered at Fry, Agios Konstantinos, Armathia, Chelatro. For the beaches, daily visits - trips with local boats are being organized.

Kos, the island of Hippocrates

Kos, the island of Hippocrates

Kos island has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Originally colonized by the Kares, it was when the Dorians came in the 11th century B.C. the Persians invaded, but they were expelled by the joint efforts of the Athenian Federation 21 years later. The island saw great development in the 4th century B.C., especially after the building of their beautiful new city in 366 B.C., where the modern city is now situated. After a brief occupation by a Persian General, Kos again prospered under the auspices of Alexander the Great. Unfortunately, during the period of the Roman Empire, its libraries and other treasures were looted. But it saw new heights with the coming of the Byzantine Empire.Later conquered by the Venetians, Kos was sold to the Knights of Saint John in 1306. They ruled it for 200 years, until their abandonment of it to the Turks. The Turkish occupation lasted for almost four hundred years, until 1912, when the Italians took over. Germany, too, came to occupy Kos until the end of Word War II when the British arrived as guardians. Kos is known throughout the world as the birthplace of Hippocrates. He is known as the father of medicine (460 B.C.), because until he rescued it from the priests and charlatans, it was not a science but practice of magic and sorcery. He introduced and systematically classified new methods for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, and described conditions, which are today named for modern scientists. The Hippocratic Oath established his as the greatest medical Mind of the time, and the Oath is considered the most significant of his writings. Even today, doctors throughout the world take this sacred vow which binds them to art of healing. One of the most remarkable archaeological sites of the island is the Asklepion, possibly the best and certainly the most renowned hospital of its time. Its famous spa, with running mineral waters, was used to treat skin diseases. Only the foundations and some pillars have remained from the splendor of the Temple of Asklepios, as well as pillars of the arcade that is thought to have been part of Hippocrates Medical School. Also surviving the millenia is the plane tree of Hippocrates tutored his students under the shade of its rich foliage. The International Hippocratic Institute was recently built near the Asklepion as a public welfare foundation whose aim is the realization of the Hippocratic principles of humanized medicine. World-renowned cultural and medical personalities and institutions. In fact the Museum of Medicine has recently begun to function, with noteworthy exhibitions, collections of books, stamps, coins and busts related to Hippocrates.

Argolida - Its rich History

Argolida - Its rich History

Argolida was inhabited in the Mesolithic Era (8000 BC) and it was one of the most crucial centers in Peloponnese. During the Neolithic Era, many significant settlements (Lerna, Tirintha, Mikines) were founded whereas in the period of the Brass the whole area flourished and many centers were developed (Midea, Asini, Tirintha, Prosimna). Among them, Mikines was the most glorious one and it gave its name to one of the most splendid cultural periods of the ancient times, the Mikinean period. The whole area was disordered in the 12th century BC by various movements of immigration. As a result, Argos was subjected to Dories it became a Doric center and gradually it subjected other Argolic towns. In the Archaic and in the classical period, there was a common sanctuary in Argolida Ireo whereas in the Hellenistic years the temple of Asklipios in Epidavros became very significant. In 146 BC, the city was conquered by the Romans and it declined. The invasions by Erouloi (267 AD) and by Goth (395 AD) disordered the area for one more time. During the Byzantine rule, Argolida belonged to the authorities of Peloponnese and it was greatly developed. At the beginning of the 13th century it subdued to the Francs and it belonged to Otto de la Ros master of Athens. For certain short periods of time it belonged to the Venetians and finally it subjected to the Turkish (1540). In the Revolution of 1821, its residents participated in some of the greatest military enterprises that took place here. Nafplio had become the temporary basis of the revolutionary government and the capital of the newborn Greek state (1828) until 1834 when Athens became the new capital. Today Argolida is one of the most fertile areas in Greece and a major tourist center.

Sivota Thesprotia, a beautiful seaside village

Sivota Thesprotia, a beautiful seaside village

Sivota is a picturesque little fisherman's village, situated 25 klm south of the harbor city Igoumenitsa and 25 klm north of the known city of Parga. The prefecture to which Sivota belongs is called Thesprotia, one of the most distant parts at the northwest of the country. 91 percentage of the prefecture is covered with mountains, through which the rivers Kalamas and Acherontas flow calmly on most days. The wild and hard on its residents environments is filled with canyons and rocks and forests and wildlife, offering an impressive and majestic view to its visitors. The local economy is based on agriculture, animal breeding, trade and tourism. The harbor of Igoumenitsa is the largest source of income for the area, which counts for approximately 45.ooo citizens.Thesprotia is a place filled with remainders of its rich history. The first Greek tribes to settle in Thesprotia were the Thesprotians, from which the area took its name, in 2000 b.C. One thousand years later, the Molossoi settled in the area, and from the 8th to the 6th century b.C. the Corinthians, the Ileians and the Kerkyraioi founded colonies in the area. At this time, the area knows its blossoming. The first copper coins were cut, a written language was used and the Common of the Thesprotians was founded, with its capital first at Elea and then at Gitani. Unfortunately, during the last two prechristian centuries, Thesprotia became familiar with destruction by a number of different exogenous factors, especially by a variety of Roman armies. Through Pax Romana new wealthy settlements were founded, Foiniki and Ladochori, only to be raided by German and Slavic tribes at the end of the 4th century A.C. Residents of the area were driven to naturally fortified positions, meaning the hard mountains of the area. Thesprotia, due to its strategic position, was the victim of wargames for years to come. It lost its shores from the Venetians, which were the rulers of the whole area at that time, at the end of the 4th century A.C. Parga, Fanari and Sagiada were created during that time. Igoumenitsa, Paramithia and Osdina were created in the After Byzantine times, in the 13th and 14th century. These cities, after their subjection to the Turks, flourished in trade and continuously struggled against the Turks, most known examples, Dionysos the Skylosophos and the villagers of Souli. After centuries of struggle, invasions, trouble and war, the Greek army finally liberated Thesprotia on the 23rd of February 1913. Consistent to its history, Thesprotia is filled with monuments of all periods of its existence, more information at recreation. Cultural Tourism, Thesprotia has a rich tradition throughout the centuries and is reflected in all parts of the area through monuments of all periods. Many sites are worth visiting, especially if one considers their significance in the Greek history. Castles at Ligia, the 3 castles situated south of river Kalamas are considered to be a colony of Corfu. Excavations have shown the existence of a small altar, a water deposit and military facilities. Elea, ancient village, city of Eleatis, founded in the 4th century B.C., first capital of Thesprotia. Now one can see parts of the walls surrounding the village. Excavations have shown a shrine, a public building, storage areas and part of a theatre. Fanoti, ancient village with castle, at the situation Ntoliani. Surrounded by walls. Elina, Ruins of an ancient village were found above Karavostasi beach and are said to be ancient Elina, capital of Thesprotians. Village protected by walls. Gitani or Titani, second most ancient capital of Thesprotians, blossomed in during the Hellenistic period. Ruined in 167 B.C. by the Romans. Excavations show parts of the city walls, two public buildings, a shrine, private homes, part of the theatre of the city and an ancient market. Thesprotia hosts approximately 16 convents of historical significance, with the oldest one dating the beginning of the 10th century and the oldest dating to the middle of the 19th century. Traditional settlements can be found in the area of Margariti and Paramithia. The area offers a large variety of alternative activities, mostly sports and nature visiting. The main natural attractions of the area are the following: Kalamas River and Kalamas delta, the river was used in the ancient days as a trade route. At it shores many important cities were established, as Ligia, Gitani, Fanoti. Today the river is a place of exquisite natural beauty and has a very important ecological significance. The area is protected, since it hosts a large variety of flora and fauna, including rare or endangered species. Kalamas Canyon, protected nationally and internationally area, hosts many variances of birds. Waterfalls, near Katarraktis or Gliziani, waterfalls that impressed many visitors of the last century, including Lord Byron. Theogefiro, natural bridge made of large rocks, used as water crossing for many years. Situated at Lithino village. Acheron River and Canyon, location of exceptional natural beauty, protected area on national and international level. Mountain Mourgana and Mountain Gorillas, filled with forests and traditional villages. One can visit the cultural museum of Tsamantas and the convent of Kamitsiani. Gorillas can be accessed through Paramithia. Activities, Canyoning at Acheron River, 4 to 5 hours route. Horse riding at Mesovouni Margariti. Sailing, from Igoumenitsa.
