Edipsos - A modern Resort

Edipsos - A modern Resort

Just two and a half hours is Aidipsos from Athens and three and a half hours from Thessaloniki counting the path to the respective ferry boat and the visitor begins his vacation. Nowadays, the resort, thanks to the enthusiasm, the hospitality of its inhabitants and the modern conveniences it offers, still attracts thousands of tourists. The area  of Aidipsos is now a tourist center that hosts a daily basis around 40000 visitors. The visitors' choices are many, being able to choose to stay from luxury hotels to rooms for rent and for food among restaurants, taverns, taverns, and shops fast food. Aidipsos also has some other features, is endowed by nature to provide healing through water, health and rejuvenation. There are more than 80 hot springs where the temperature ranges from 28°C to 86°C. The thermal properties of these sources contribute effectively to treat diseases of the joints, such as deforming arthritis, spondyloarthritides, myalgia, lumbago, neuralgia, etc. With the spa also addressed several gynecological disorders such as salpingitis, endometritis, neutering, ovarian failure, and impotence. Northeast of the spa and just 4 km away is the settlement of Edipsos, the story of which is similar to the spa. The manor was the Ottoman Turks. In 1835 formed the City of Aidipsos, which is situated in  Evia and installed there by public authorities in 1837-38 is the sale of the area by the Turks for their residents. In 1912 the headquarters of the Municipality moved to the Baths. Aidipsos today, because of urbanization, has almost merged with the baths. The charm and cleanliness of the village makes it stand out and be a point of attraction for tourists in the surrounding area, enjoying coffee or ouzo in cafes in the square, beneath the shade of old trees, and delicious appetizers in the taverns. In the square of the village lies the church "Assumption", which was built in 1872 in baroque style.

Kalambaka, a city built below the rock of the Meteora

Kalambaka, a city built below the rock of the Meteora

kalambaka hotels : Every year, millions of visitors come from all over the world in order to admire and honour Meteora. If its needed, they stay at Kalampaka and Kastraki. Kalampaka is a city of rich history and important monuments. The one of the greatest importance is the Holy Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary that is at the north-eastern part of the city under the very high rock of Aea. The city of Kalampaka is built on the feet of the Meteora and it is at the left side of the river Pinios at the point that it enters the plain of Thessaly. It is the starting place for those visitors who wish to be familiar with the monuments and the magnificent sites of Aspropotamos of Hasia, of Koziakas and especially of the Meteora. The city of Kalampaka is the capital of the homonymous province that takes up the north-western part of the prefecture of Trikala. There, one can find nice hotels, modern campings, restaurants, tourist shops, etc. The ancient name of the city was Aeginion. This is how it is mentioned in the Hellenistic and Roman years because of the great importance of its position. The name Aeginion is witnessed from an enshrined inscription on the wall that is at the eastern part of the church of Saint John the Baptist. At the beginning of the 10th century (901-907) Kalampaka of today is mentioned as Stagi, a name that is reserved until today as a Metropolitan title. Many travellers passed through Kalampaka from the ancient years until today and they refer to it by the name Aeginion or by the name Stagi or by its present name Kalampaka. At the north-eastern part of the city exists the picturesque neighbourhood of Sopotos, under the rock of the Holy Trinity (east) and the rock of Alsos (north). In the city there are many small churches -country chapels of post Byzantine age. In fact, many of them have admirable hagiographies. The cathedral church of Saint Vissarion is constructed in the honour of Saint Metropolitan of Larissa, who was the founder and the owner of the Monastery of Dusikos. The church has been hagiographied entirely by John Albanis. The Byzantine church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary is the most important and most imposing monument of Kalampaka which constitutes a point of reference and adoration for all the faithful people. Despite the significant efforts that have been materialised, it is obvious the abandonment on behalf of the people in change for the systematic maintenance of the temple and the environmental space, too. Let us hope that UNESCO, the European Community and mostly the Greek state will be interested in the maintenance of this appreciable monument of Orthodoxy before it is too late. The church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, which is found in the old city, was erected between the 10th and the 11th century on the ruins of an old Christian "basilica" church. The order (way of building) is "trikliti" (triforium) basilica of mixed type "it has very high and lit the intermediate "klitos" (aisle) of the narthex and the "trivilo". The outer narthex was added in the 16th century. In the southern wall there are surrounded with wall externally a lot of ancient parts of bas-reliefs (rodakes representations wrought in relief, signs, capes etc.), as well as old Christian sculpture with a vine-shoot. From the sculpture decoration of the Byzantine basilica, the oldest is the marble "kivorio" (tomb) of the Holy Altar found in the Sanctuary. Special interest presents the unique in Greece marble pulpit that imposingly is raised at the centre of the intermediate "klitos" in front of the Holy Gate. It has been reconstructed to its biggest part from architectural parts of the old pulpit. The murals of the church are dated from the 12th until the 16th century and are of exceptional interest. A lot of murals were created in 1573 by priest Kiriazis and by Neofytos, son of the eminent painter Theofanis from Crete. The most important of the temples portable pictures is the both sides painted picture, which on the one side portrays the Assumption of Virgin Mary and on the order the Christs Crucifixion. The two now separate, pictures after the theft and their restoration are kept in the Varlaam Monastery of the Meteora. The wood carved temple of the church belongs to the appreciable work of the post Byzantine wood carving and it was created during the 17th century. In a little depth on the front left part of the main temple, part of a mosaic flooring had been revealed. As we enter the temple on the northern wall of the inner narthex they are written, with capital letters writing, the "golden bull" of the Emperor Andronikos c Paleologos 1336 with which the borders of the Bishopric of Stagi are determined and privileges are granted, as well as the "sigilio" (the Patriarchs edict) of the Ecumenical "universal". Patriarch Antonios D 1393 with which the privileges of the Bishopric of Stagi - that various emperors of Byzantium had granted occasionally are renewed. Impressive and imposing is also the churchs bell tower, found on the northern side of the entrance in the grounds of the church.

Dilofo Zagori

Dilofo Zagori

Dilofo is located in Zagoria villages or Zagori. It is built amphitheatrically feet densely planted two oak hills, from where it took its name, at an altitude of 880m. The distance form Ioannina is only 32Km.The earlier name was Sopetseli. It was structured settlement from 540 BC, where the houses were scattered over a large area. Remnants of these buildings are still around today, and the chapel of the Virgin Mary which is now a deserted church, is lost in the dense vegetation. Dilofo, in a few centuries before, was the reference point for residents and the center of the former settlements. The village offers a journey through time, and made few interventions in the structure and architecture of the beginning of this century. The attractions include stone fountains, mansions (among them the tallest house in Zagori, 13.5m. height at the entrance of the village), the cobbled streets so well preserved, its numerous churches.

Mytilene

Mytilene

Mytilini got her name by one of Makaros daughters, the island's first colonist. The Municipality of Mytilini consists of the villages Agia Marina, Taxiarhes, Loutra, Panagiouda, Moria, Alyfanta, Afalonas, Pamphila and the city of Mytilini. It is about 188 miles from Piraeus and it has about 25000 inhabitants. Impressive buildings of a neo-classic architecture, historical monuments, unique archaeological treasures, like the mosaic-works found at Menandros House (exhibited now at the Archaeological Museum) and the natural hot springs compose a rich cultural context. The town's foundations are extended over seven adjoining hills. The centre of the town is divided into three main parts: Kioski, which is a very beautiful suburb, the central old neighbourhoods and the west neighbourhoods. The efforts of the authorities to reconstruct the centre of the town and to adapt the needs of the Municipality of Mytilini to the demands of the new century are remarkable. Kioski, the old aristocratic suburb of Mytilini where we can find the new Archaeological Museum, is not far away from the Enetic Castle. The Castle was situated on the isolated, by the channel of Euripus, part of Mytilini and seemed like a small island. The channel of Euripus, along which there were a lot of bridges, had been uniting, in the past, the south port to the north port dividing, this way, Mytilini in two parts. At Kioski there are still authentic mansions of a traditional Lesbian architecture. The main street that goes through Kioski leads to the north port, where we can see the shattered quay and other ruins of the past. In a small distance from there, there were found ancient ruins and the entrance of the channel that was mentioned above. Important ruins of ancient and roman structures are also discovered in the north part of Mytilini.

Kastoria, the city with the wonderful lake

Kastoria, the city with the wonderful lake

The lake of Kastoria is the most precious treasure of the city. It is a jewel, which enjoys the visitors and the inhabitants as a place for recreation and as a stimulus for romantism and reminiscence. On the lakeshore there are enough squares and parks. In these specially designed areas, visitors can walk on paved paths and admire the natural beauty of the lake at all seasons. Orestida Lake of Kastoria is considered morphologically the most beautiful lake of Greece and has been declared a "Monument of Natural Beauty" by the Ministry of Culture. The natural basin of the lake, surrounded by mountains of excellent geomorphology, constitutes a unique wetland. It is a very important wetlands for waterfowl and for the birds of prey and serves as breeding, feeding and hibernation. It maintains a rich bird fauna, including rare and endangered species. At the lake, there are large quantities of various fish species, and is ideal for fishing, both with the traditional boats in deep waters and with fishing rod in the lakeshores. In the lake there are fish such as carp, butterflies, tsironia, tournes, etc. Fishing is allowed almost throughout the year except the period of reproduction of fish. Fishing equipment can be found in specialty shops in the city of Kastoria and Argos Orestiko. The mountain of Grammos with the sources of the river Aliakmonas is an interesting destination for visitors of Kastoria. The area of Grammos is one of the most productive and pristine forests of Greece. The area is sparsely populated and the main occupations of the inhabitants are forestry, hunting and farming. The area, with excellent morphology and rare flora and fauna, is an ideal place ideal for walks and tours.
