Kastoria, the city with the wonderful lake
The lake of Kastoria is the most precious treasure of the city. It is a jewel, which enjoys the visitors and the inhabitants as a place for recreation and as a stimulus for romantism and reminiscence. On the lakeshore there are enough squares and parks. In these specially designed areas, visitors can walk on paved paths and admire the natural beauty of the lake at all seasons. Orestida Lake of Kastoria is considered morphologically the most beautiful lake of Greece and has been declared a "Monument of Natural Beauty" by the Ministry of Culture. The natural basin of the lake, surrounded by mountains of excellent geomorphology, constitutes a unique wetland. It is a very important wetlands for waterfowl and for the birds of prey and serves as breeding, feeding and hibernation. It maintains a rich bird fauna, including rare and endangered species. At the lake, there are large quantities of various fish species, and is ideal for fishing, both with the traditional boats in deep waters and with fishing rod in the lakeshores. In the lake there are fish such as carp, butterflies, tsironia, tournes, etc. Fishing is allowed almost throughout the year except the period of reproduction of fish. Fishing equipment can be found in specialty shops in the city of Kastoria and Argos Orestiko.
The mountain of Grammos with the sources of the river Aliakmonas is an interesting destination for visitors of Kastoria. The area of Grammos is one of the most productive and pristine forests of Greece. The area is sparsely populated and the main occupations of the inhabitants are forestry, hunting and farming. The area, with excellent morphology and rare flora and fauna, is an ideal place ideal for walks and tours.
