Heraklion, one of the best tourist destinations
The prefecture of Heraklion is located in central-eastern part of Crete and is the most economically developed prefecture in Crete and one of the most productive in Greece. Its capital is Heraklion, the largest city on the island. The coast and the mountainous parts of the prefecture, are inhabited from prehistoric times to today. For this, the area is considered to be one of the richest sites in Crete, with the magnificent Minoan palaces at Knossos, Phaistos, Malia and Heraklion. Of course, the beautiful beaches excite the interest of locals and visitors, just outside the urban centers, where hotels operate along the northern coastline.
Some popular beaches are Amoudara, Karteros, Tobruk, Mallia, Hersonisos, where the most are established with adequate facilities for water sports, such as beach volleyball, and restaurants, cafes and nightclubs, attracting every year a large number of tourists and providing alternative entertainment options. Less cosmopolitan are the beaches Pantanasa, Paliokastro Ligaria, Agia Pelagia, Psaromoura and Mononaftis, which began as small settlements of fishermen and has developed into tourist resorts without losing their authenticity. Moreover, beyond the beach Mononaftis are beautiful beaches, as Fodele, which have the necessary hotel facilities. Also, in recent years is an increasing trend of rural tourism accommodation, created in the hinterland of Heraklion, on existing or new buildings.
