Alexandroupolis - A Hospitable City
Alexandroupolis is one of the newest Greek cities. It was founded by the Turks in 1876 as a trading post (despite the fact that it did not have a port) for loading goods on ships destined for Adrianoupolis, which was connected by railway. It took the name Dedeagats, by the name of a Turkish monk who had been buried at that point. Russians engineers drew up the street plan in 1877, when the region was occupied by Russia, in the Russian-Turkish war. The Town, who had collected many Greek residents, came to Greece with the rest of Thrace, of ordering the Treaty of Sevres. Immediately, it took its current name in honor of the then King Alexander, who had visited it when it was just released. The ruins of ancient Traianoupolis are just ten minutes from the eastern exit of town. The municipal park, the picturesque church of St. Eleftherios, the neoclassical building of the Pedagogical Academy and some old houses with typical architecture of the century make up the image of this city.
